According to Vincent

At the beginning of the movie Collateral, Vincent tells Max what he thinks about Los Angeles:

"Tell you the truth, whenever I'm here I can't wait to leave. It's too sprawled out, disconnected. You know? ... 17 million people. This has got to be the fifth biggest economy in the world and nobody knows each other. I read about this guy who gets on the MTA here, dies. Six hours he's riding the subway before anyone notices his corpse doing laps around L.A., people on and off sitting next to him. Nobody notices."

The story Vincent tells, in addition to being shocking, is a pretty strong (and not very positive!) statement about what he thinks people in Los Angeles are like.

So, what does Vincent think about Los Angeles? Do you agree with him? Why or why not?

Please share your thoughts in the form of a "comment" on this post. (You don't need to write very much, but you should write in complete sentences.) Please do this by class on Friday, Sept. 30.

  1. It is said by Vincent. Vincent thought people in L.A. are so disconnected in such a big city. Although it has one of the biggest economy in the world, but people who are living here become more and more separated. He though they are very apartness and do not care each other. Actually, I do not agree it. I think people in L.A. are very friendly, polite and like to help each other. They know how to do well in their works and enjoy the life. There is no doubt that the geography here is very different from others, but it can not be the reason that people living here are apathy.

  2. i agree with Vincent, live in big city, there is not enough " warm" , every one busy, goes fast, drives fast, eating fast, they don t have enough time to love. to get hope. i thought a sentence of Shawshank redemption: Get busy living, Or get busy dying.
in end of Collateral, Vincent died in the train, and he says it again.
    it s kind of satirical.

  3. I think Vincent is right. As you know, people have a lot of things to do now. They might have a jobs and they might have a lot of homeworks. So, people become very busy and they might have many preesures. They have no time to care about others and connect with others. The only thing they care about is theirsleves. I don't think people would pay attention to others. Thus, I agree with Vincent.
