AC in BHC

Part of your homework for class today was to write down some examples of American culture that you saw when we watched the first part of Beverly Hills Cop.

Remember that we have defined culture as "the behavior, beliefs, values, attitudes, and customs of a particular group of people" (adapted from dictionary.com). Any criteria can be used to define culture: someone's age, nationality, religion, race, ethnicity, profession, and/or hobbies can all play a role in determining the culture (or cultures) to which he or she belongs.

For your homework tonight, pick one of the examples of American culture that you wrote about and write a brief comment on this post. In your comment, please answer the following questions:
a) What example of A.C. did you choose, and how is that example shown in the movie?
b) How is this example of American culture different from a similar example in your home country's culture?

Make sure to write your comment before the beginning of class on Friday. Let me know if you have questions!

  1. The example of American Culture I chose is that all men are born equal. One scene in the movie shows that Axel entered a hotel called Beverly Palm and had an argument with the lady at front desk about reservation. Axel turned angry that he thought she is a racist. The manage heard that and came in. To calm Axel down,he gave Axel a room with discount price.
In my country, if there is no reservation, and the hotel is full, you would not get a room. There is no race problem at all. But in this movie, the manager do not want other people and Axel thought this is a hotel with jim crowism, so he solved the problem of Axel.

  2. There are so many different races living in United States peacefully with different language and different religions but they are all one nation which called American, this is the beauty of United states. The beginning of the movie shows African American culture and community and the way that they live. The movie show the discrimination between black and white in 1980s,in another part of movie you clearly see that how Axel Foley was arguing with receptionist to get a room in the hotel and they were trying to reject him.he was screaming and saying "Cause There Is No Niggers Allowed In Here!"
This sentence explain the high level of discrimination in United States in 1980s.
There is no discrimination between races in my country but there is a religious discrimination. In my opinion we have to respect all nations, all religion and live peacefully.

  3. From this movie,I saw African American is not very welcome, but they also enjoy freedom and equality.
When he came in the store to looking for his friend, the White man did not care about him.but, not all of people do that, his friend is a beautiful white girl, also his unlucky white friend who dead in his apartment.
In my hometown, there are same color people, but rich people does not care the poor people, even the life.there is no freedom, never be equality.
