The Great Timeline Experiment

Hi everyone,

It's time for your first blog assignment! Before class on Friday (Sept. 2), please post your answers to the following questions. You may discuss answers and ideas with your classmates, but you need to make sure you respond individually.

Phase II students: answer all three questions (100 words minimum per question, 300 words total minimum).

Phase I students: answer question #2 only (150 words minimum).

1. When you first visited or moved to L.A., what were some of your earliest impressions? Did you know much about L.A. history before completing the timeline exercise? If so, what?
2. What were two of the most surprising things you read or learned about in the timeline? Be sure to use your own words, and to mention at least one new thing (something that the people who posted before you did not mention).
3. How have your ideas about L.A. history and/or culture changed since completing the timeline exercise? What do you know (or think) about the city that you didn't know (or think) before?

Thanks, everyone. Let me know if you have any questions!

  2. 1.I was arrived L.A. in the evening on July 26. When the plane landed this city, I knew that I would start my new life here. One of my friends drove me to my apartment. When we were passing through the L.A. downtown, there were a lot of high buildings in front of me. I love the views of this city in the evening. It looks like the twinkling stars in the night. Talking to my earliest impression, One of the biggest one is that I feel people here in L.A. like to enjoy their life although they may under some big pressure in their works. When you go to some playgrounds or beach near here, you may find that there are a lot of people there, they talking, joking, enjoying the sunshine. In L.A. you can free to express yourself and do whatever you want to do (certainly without crime). Honestly speaking, I didn’t know much history about L.A. Before I came here, I just know that L.A. is an international city with variety culture and a lot of sunshine , this city can always give a good impression to everyone.

2.There are a lot of things surprising me in the timeline during my reading. One of them is about the history of LAPD(Los Angeles Police Department).I was surprised that this safety and justice city was lawless and confusion at the half of 19 century. Through reading the events which related to the contribution of LAPD, I know this city had its first police department at 1853, and it became official at 1869. AT that time, there were only six people worked there and paid by the salary. Another thing is the population in L.A. The number of people was only 1,610 in April4, 1850 and it experienced a dramatic growth to 5,614 in 1870.But now, there are 17.8 million people living here. That’s why people always call here “THE BIG LOS ANGELES”. There is one more thing I like to mention here, the Disneyland. L.A. has the first Disneyland all over the world. Its concept is from the variety park visiting by the Walt Disney and his daughters. The construction of Disneyland began in 1954 and finally completed in July 17,1955.Disneyland is famous for its fireworks all over the world.

3.Before I read the timeline, I didn’t know that Los Angeles was not a huge city until 20th century. The population in Los Angeles grows very fast. Till today, we have more than 17.8 million people living in the Los Angeles area. I can see through the developing history of Los Angeles been built one small step at a time and as one of the greatest city in the world. I did not know about the founding of LAPD before. I was shocked that it used to have only six officers. Also I did not know about the history of the fascinating film industry of Hollywood, although I am a huge Hollywood movie fan.

  4. 1.Before i move to LA i knew a lot stuff about LA because some of my friends have been living here.
When i was leaving the Austrian airport i was very excited,by the time airplane landed in LAX it was around 1:30 pm and my friends were waiting for me at the curb side, the next day after my arrival my friend took me sight seeing LA,my first visit of Hollywood was very exciting and fun,i was really impressed by the Hollywood walk of fame with movie stars name and their foot and hands print on the sidewalk on Hollywood Blvd.
Another attractive place in LA is Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, which is one of the most famous and beautiful street in the world, with famous designer stores like,Salvadore Ferragamo,Luis Vuitton,Prada...i was very happy to see Rodeo Drive and Hollywood which a lot of people dream to visit.
Before competing the time line i didn't know much about LA history. The only thing that i knew about LA was Hollywood and movies.

2.I got a lot of information about the LA history when i was reading the timeline, one of the surprising thing about the LA is the increasing of population,in 1850 the population was 1,610 and now it reach to 9,818,605.The people move to LA because of the good weather and the best economy that could be a good reason for the increasing of population.Through reading i learned about The history of LAPD(Los Angeles Police Department)which was very interesting. The beginning of LAPD was in 1853, since then the Angelino is a safest place in United States. The timeline also mentioned about the Chinese who were hung by the mob in 1871 and then how they arrested and sentenced to jail. One of the tourism attraction of LA is Universal Studio Hollywood, founded 1912 by German immigrant it is the largest film and television studio in the world with 9,000 employee and a long and proud history of film-making.

3.Before reading the timline i didn't know about the history of LAPD,when the police department became official and how it developed.
the information in the timeline was so interesting for me.Also the timeline is mentioning about the increasing of population of LA in 1850,according to statistic the LA population in 2011 is 9,818,605.
